Lai Laoshi

Lai Laoshi harvests leaves from a national forest in the Xilan Mountains, which include the highest peaks in the Yushan mountain range. Originally a tea garden, the territory was reclaimed by the Taiwanese government and allowed to grow wild. The roots of the wild trees grow as deep as 6 meters into the mountain, imparting a distinctly mineral character to the leaves. This mineral character distinguishes the Teacher’s Oolong from other lightly-oxidized, high mountain oolongs. The leaves are roasted lightly using traditional methods, including longan wood charcoal, to preserve harmonious balance among the floral notes and mineral qualities. Appying varied roasting temperatures without a predetermined formula, Lai Laoshi is guided in his technique by Buddhist principles to draw out the unique essence of each harvest. The result is complex tea that exhibits remarkable clarity.
