This tea is farmed following Taoist principles for as little intervention as possible in the ecosystem of the tea plant. The plants are not watered by artificial means and seeds grow where they fall. The product exhibits both restraint and wildness, for a complex product that is elegant and rich, with floral and woodsy notes balanced with refreshing sweetness.

The Chen family

The Chen family makes our Ruby Black tea. Living and farming in Nantou, the family has been making tea for five generations. Following Taoism, the family allows their tea garden to grow wild, intervening as little as possible. The principle derives from Wu Wei, sometimes translated as effortless action, to sustain spontaneous balance in the life of the ecosystem. Growing wild with minimal cultivation, the garden has an unpredictable quality yielding new nuances with each harvest. In the same spirit, the Chen family balance their profound knowledge of tea with devotion to simplicity in all things. The result is tea that is at once deep and clear, refined and full of life.
